2008 North Dakota City of the Year | Mayville - Portland, North Dakota

2008 North Dakota City of the Year

Mayville, North Dakota, was named Co-City of the Year, along with Cooperstown, during the

annual North Dakota League of Cities (NDLC) conference in Fargo, North Dakota. The City of
the Year award recognizes cities for the quality, number, and extent of activities undertaken in the
community.

This city of approximately 2,000 people in eastern North Dakota boasts many of the same
services and amenities as cities more than 10 times its size.

In fact, Mayville approved a Renaissance Zone and projects including the Riverwood Addition, a
new residential neighborhood featuring more than 60 lots; a water park; and refurbishing a
historic bridge. A Renaissance Zone designates a number of contiguous city blocks where local
and state tax incentives are available to current and potential zone residents. The incentives are
offered when improvements are made to the quality, appearance, and value of projects within the
zone.

Healthcare is a priority in Mayville. This year, Mayville’s Luther Memorial Home was one of
only 380 nursing homes in the country that received national recognition for their commitment to
quality care.

The Mayville-Portland Economic Development Corporation also secured funding for a new
regional airport. The airport serves Traill and Steele counties and is a key player for additional
economic development within the area.
A new sewer lagoon system was built for Mayville residents, and the city upgraded its gravity
filter control system, which provides low-cost wastewater treatment for the Red River Valley
community.

In an effort to keep Mayville a safe and secure community, the city police station moved to a new
location. This larger space includes more room for evidence, storage, and an interview room.
Residents can get involved in many events throughout the year. These include “Relay for Life”
and “Women’s Night Out” along with other community activities. All of these events are great
opportunities for residents to come together as a community.

“The city of Mayville has made progress over the years. All these improvements are a part of the
many possibilities right here in our community,” says Don Moen, Mayville’s mayor.
